Back in 2017 there was a teaser that was released that there would be an Avengers game making its way into a video game at some point. With the completion of the movies, our patience and anticipation may finally be rewarded. There has been a leak that on June 10th, Square Enix will be officially announcing their Marvel Avengers game at E3! This is no doubt some exciting news for fans of the beloved MCU. The Avengers has been breaking box office records left and right so it is no wonder that there would eventually be a game rendition of this massively popular movie franchise.

So what do we know? It has been confirmed that Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal (game developers that have produced hits such as Tomb Raider and Deus Ex) are involved in this project. There hasn’t been any news on whether or not this game will tie into the main storyline of the movies but it may be cool to get a new storyline that is hopefully just as immersive as the films were. With each movie that was produced we developed deep connections with characters as they battled, not only villains, but struggled internally and amongst themselves. I believe these deep connections formed will seamlessly transition to an Avengers game making it that much more enjoyable.

I’m going to get a bit nostalgic for a moment here as some of you may remember a time way back in the Nintendo NES days when the Captain America and the Avengers game was released. To start you could choose between Captain America and Hawkeye as you went off to get Iron Man and Vision back on your side to defeat the Red Skull and his army of villains. It took so long for me to get Iron Man but when I did, flying with him was worth every hard fought hour. There was also a pretty sweet dual mode where you could take on a friend head to head and find out which one was the superior Avenger. This game was so hard but talking about this now makes me want to pop this game in the old NES and play after I finish writing this!

So why am I getting nostalgic on you here? The reason is because older games like this mixed with what we know could give some insight as to what direction they could potentially take this game. It’s Square Enix so there is a good chance there will be an RPG element to the game. With a plethora of characters and villains, they could incorporate a solid fighting dynamic with a variety of attacks. It would be cool to even incorporate special combo attacks depending on the heroes in a lineup. Based on what we’ve seen in the past with Tomb Raider/Deus Ex games, I could easily see a rich story mode similar to Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite bringing a visually pleasing clash of characters fighting to save the world from a super-powered villain that is beyond any one hero’s capabilities of defeating. Will it be Thanos or Ultron like the movies? Red Skull like the old NES game? Maybe they will go an entirely different direction and use Kang the Conqueror or Korvac? There are so many more possibilities that could be listed here but one thing is for sure, no matter who the foe, the Avengers will be ready to fight! Whatever it takes!!
