After writing my first Franchise Reboot blog (read it here if you haven’t), my brain has been flooded with so many more ideas for reboots. I hope everyone who read it enjoyed it because I have many more coming. This will probably be the easiest one to write about because…. well, it’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Who doesn’t love the Ninja Turtles?

So, just to be clear, this is focused on the video games. The movies and cartoons have been rebooted tons of times. To be completely honest, I actually liked the Michael Bay movies… Anyway….

WHY REBOOT?

TMNT has been wildly popular for decades now. They haven’t gotten the video game attention that they deserve in years (not including Injustice 2, they were only guest characters). Most of us grew up playing TMNT games for NES, SNES, or Sega Genesis. Bringing the heroes in a half-shell back to the forefront of video games would be nostalgic and refreshing. Here’s some pics from TMNT games from over the years, just in case you needed a reminder of how awesome they were.

HOW THEY SHOULD DO IT:

“They” (meaning any video game developer out there who’s actually competent at making good games), should look to the more recent and successful video games on the market. What comes to my mind is Spider-Man for the PS4. Imagine an open world/free roam game that allows you to explore the streets, rooftops, and even sewers of NYC as you alternate between the 4 turtles. Each brother could have particular abilities that could help in puzzle-solving and exploration. Although it was a fighting game, I loved the way that Injustice 2 included different types of gear sets. The sets were mostly just cosmetic, but it allowed you to customize your character’s appearance in so many different ways and colors. The Turtles had many different headbands, weapons, and special moves that were able to be equipped; so adding something like this as progression rewards while you level up your Turtles would be awesome to play around with (some examples of Injustice 2’s customization features are in the gallery below). Building a lair underground would be a fun touch too. Customizing your own Turtles’ pad in the sewer somewhere would be another creative feature. Obviously, this would all be in addition to fighting massive hordes of Foot Clan members, bosses, and ultimately The Shredder.

These are just some ideas and features that I think would make for an awesome new take on TMNT. They’re ready for it, and so are we.
