Power Rangers - Battle for the Grid: A Review

Fighting games are probably my favorite genre when it comes to video games. About a year ago was my last fighting game review (Mortal Kombat 11: A Review), so I’m very overdue for another one. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid caught my attention on social media, and I figured I’d give it a shot. It was easy to give it a chance too because it was free to download on the Xbox Game Pass. It’s probably the first Power Rangers game I’ve played in 20 years. Also, I haven’t seen an actual Power Rangers TV show in ages too, so I’m very out of touch with the characters in this game.

The button configuration in the game was easy to get used to quickly and it only took a few matches to get the hang of. Combos are easy to string together and “super moves” are easy to pull of with just a pull of the right trigger. The characters are fun and diverse with plenty of different move sets and attacks. There is also a feature which allows you to pick a Megazord as well, which can aid your team in battle. The fighting is very similar to Marvel vs. Capcom’s 3-on-3 style. You choose 3 fighters that you can freely swap out at any time during the match. You can also call a teammate out to assist you in your attacks. This allows you to string together massive combos that can deal a lot of damage.

There aren’t many negatives to the game. The roster could use a few changes (like adding my personal favorite, Billy the original Blue Ranger). Some of the characters that are in the game don’t bring much value to the experience. Cenezoic Blue Ranger is boring. Also, Goldar is the slowest fighting game character of all time. He’s basically useless.

Overall, the game has a fun, fast-paced fighting style. There are some unique features to the game that allow it to stand out against other fighting games. The roster could use some different fighters, and some current fighters need an upgrade. My score for the game is 8.0 out of 10. I’m a generous guy. I like reviewing good games but trust me, you’ll know it when I review a bad game.
