Top 5 SNES Games Available on the Switch
The Super Nintendo (SNES) was a big part of my life as a kid. I played so many games on that system for countless hours. I was obviously a big Mortal Kombat II guy, but there were so many games I can remember logging tons of hours into. Lucky for me and the rest of the millennial gaming world who grew up on these games, Nintendo has decided to offer up 20 SNES games that are now available on the Nintendo Switch for online subscribers. So, when something like this happens, its only natural that I come up with a ranking. Here’s my top 5.
5.) Kirby’s Dream Course
Kirby’s Dream Course is as if a golf game was absorbed by Kirby… ironic… Seriously though, this is a great game. It is one of the lesser known games on the list of 20, but it earns a spot at #5 on this list by being a creative and challenging puzzle/golf game. It combines Kirby’s power-absorbing elements into a turn-based mini golf game with a fun twist. If you have never played before, now is the perfect time to check it out.
4.) Mario Kart
No need for an introduction on this one. Everyone has played Mario Kart before. Everyone loves it. This is where it all began. Such a classic game and it never gets old. Racing against a friend in 2-player mode is still such a fun time, even in the 2D Mushroom Kingdom. I have never been a fan of the blue shell and this was before Nintendo introduced that nonsense. So, if you’re winning the race by a mile, there’s no chance of some 8th place chump taking you out from 3 laps behind. It never made sense to me because only the people way in the back ever get the blue shell and they attack the 1st place driver, which helps out the people in 2nd and 3rd place. I just don’t see the benefit or purpose…. I digress... Anyway, the game is an all-time classic and is finally ready to be brought back into our hearts.
3.) Super Metroid
Super Metroid is an action/adventure game that sends Samus Aran onto the alien planet, Zebes to explore alien life forms. While exploring uncharted territory, you come across many enemies and dangers. Boss battles are fun and challenging. Samus’s suit acquires upgrades throughout the journey, so the gameplay never gets stale. The 2D side-scrolling shooter has held up over the years and is definitely worth a run-through. Metroid games are pretty underrated among the video game world, but I’m here to tell you that if you’ve never played one, you’re missing out. Super Metroid is my #3 on this list and I highly recommend playing through it, ASAP.
2.) Super Mario World
Just like Mario Kart, everyone has played this game at some point in their life. Mario has been the face of Nintendo for about as long as the company has been around. Super Mario World is such a great game for so many different reasons. The game play is simple yet challenging. This game introduced us to our favorite green reptile dog-raptor, Yoshi. It’s entertaining and even had a save feature, which not many games had back then. 2-player mode allows you and a partner to team up as Mario and Luigi to travel through the Mushroom Kingdom…errr actually Dinosaur Land (yeah that’s the name) and switch off attempting to beat new levels and areas. It’s just easy to play time and time again.
1.) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Zelda’s true break-out performance. This game set the stage and standard for many more incredible titles after it. ALTP is the best game for SNES, hands down. The exploration of the 2D Hyrule is timeless. I was too young to actually appreciate this game when I was a kid, but now I understand the greatness behind it. It truly is the best SNES game, not just on this list of 20, but ever. Zelda ALTP set the standard for Zelda games in the future, like Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. Without the foundation of ALTP, none of these games would have ever been as truly great as they were. Trust me on that. And trust me, you need to play this game. Whether its your first time or your 100th time, its still an incredible adventure.
