Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath: A Review
Last year I reviewed Mortal Kombat 11 and I gave it a very generous score of 8.6 out of 10. That was after playing the game for about 2 weeks. Little did I realize that I only scratched the surface of the game. This game is deep. Real deep. I’ve recently gotten the most out of this game and I will say that I think 8.6 was too low. I love this game and I think it is the greatest fighting game ever made. Yeah, I went there. Aftermath is the expansion that was released back in May and it added even more to an already stellar game.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Aftermath introduces an additional story sequence that covers the path of Liu Kang after he defeats Kronika and gains the power to control the hourglass which basically grants him the power to shape time and history. He is interrupted just as he begins his new journey as the “father of time.” Shang Tsung shows up with Nightwolf and Fujin. Liu Kang is reluctant to trust Shang Tsung, but he ultimately forms an alliance with the sorcerer. Long-story short, Shang Tsung betrays literally everybody and tries to take the hourglass for himself. The story is expanded in excellent fashion and involves just about every major character to the franchise. The end allows you to choose who wins the final battle for the hourglass: Shang Tsung or Fire God Liu Kang.
Aftermath brought plenty more along with it. Three new characters: Fujin, Sheeva, and Robocop. Yes, Robocop. Each one is unique, just like all previous fighters. The new expansion also added more skins, gear pieces, and brutalities to each fighter.
Also, Friendships are back. Friendships have been absent in Mortal Kombat since MK Trilogy. Each character has one unique Friendship that allows you to finish off your opponent with a nice fun gesture. For example, Scorpion throws his firey spear but pulls back a cuddly teddy bear to hug. I know, super cute, right? If Friendships aren’t your thing, the game brought back level Fatalities as well. Certain levels have fatalities that are unique to your environment, including the Dead Pool. Speaking of the Dead Pool, the Dead Pool is back! Along with 3 other new arenas.
This will be the first game to receive an honorary award: The Silvers Seal of Approval. It’s a real thing, trust me. This game gets a 10 out of 10. 5 stars. A+. All the highest grades/scores possible. I love the game and hopefully there’s still more to come. If you ever want to square off on Xbox, my gamertag is lightning55. See you in Outworld.
