3 Likely Destinations for Phil Kessel
It’s been confirmed that Phil Kessel will be traded out of Pittsburgh this summer. When or where? No one knows. Judging by Pittsburgh’s history of trades in recent years, there’s several teams that are more likely to be a trade partner to acquire Kessel’s services than others. Kessel has a “no trade clause” as a part of his contract, but he has given Pittsburgh 8 teams that he would be willing to go to. It probably isn’t Minnesota, as per Pierre LeBrun. We can also assume it isn't Philadelphia because these two cities despise each other. So, here’s a list of potential destinations that I think Phil the Thrill could be headed to this summer.

1. LA KINGS
Los Angeles is in desperate need of offense. Kessel’s 82 points in 82 games last season are an exact fit for what the Kings are looking for, which also include his 12 power play goals. LA’s power play (PP%) ranked 27th last season, and their goals for (GF) was ranked 30th. This team needs offense and they won’t find 82 points in the draft. They’ll need it via trade, and Kessel seems to be a fitting piece. The asking price may be too far out of LA’s reach, unless they’re willing to give up that 5th overall pick in this year’s draft. If LA is somehow able to get Philly Thrilly this summer, they’d be acquiring a nice piece that will help them get better in a hurry. Also, who doesn't want to live in southern California? I could see Kessel waiving his NTC to move there.
2. ARIZONA COYOTES
The Dessert Dogs are another potential Pacific destination for Kessel. The Coyotes have a little less cap-space to work with than the Kings, but it seems like Arizona may have a few more notable prospects to offer, such as Cam Dineen (D), Aiden Hill (G), and Nate Schnarr (F). These are all enticing pieces that could be moved over, along with a draft pick or two that could help Pittsburgh relieve some cap. Another warm climate as well. It would be a nice change of pace for a guy who has only played in northern NHL markets thus far in his career.
3. VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Most recently, the Canuck and Penguins traded Tanner Pearson for Erik Gudbranson back in February. There is some familiarity with these two clubs. And Vancouver has openly expressed their willingness to trade several notable players this offseason, including Ben Hutton and Chris Tanev. Tanev has been the discussion of a lot of teams seeking defensive help this offseason. He’s a solid D man and the Penguins would certainly be interested in his skill set this summer, especially with the likely buyout of Jack Johnson’s contract. Vancouver is also a very lovely city, from what I hear. Not a warmer location, but still a high-end choice, as far as fun cities go.
