"Too Early" Divisional Winner Predictions Revisited Too Early
It’s always fun to revisit old predictions and see how wrong you were. I do have to give myself some credit because I feel like a few of these predictions are still holding up even with some time left to go in the NHL season. It may be too early to check myself here, but I think its still something worth talking about.
“Too Early” Divisional Winners Predictions
The upcoming NHL season features some very interesting divisional lineups. A 56-game season that only allows teams to play within their divisions will create plenty of chaos. There can only be 4 divisional winners this year and I’ve decided on who I think will finish on top of each group. Check it out here to find out who they are.
NHL Offseason Checkpoint
The excitement level is starting to ramp up now that we are potentially a month and some change away from the season getting started. With how the NHL handled the bubble and protocols for this nagging Corona Virus, I am confident we will be under the way on January 1st.
Grading the Reverse Retro Jerseys
The NHL has completely distracted the world from the fact that nobody knows when the 2020-21 season will begin. Hopefully we get a Jan. 1 Winter Classic season opener. For now, we’ll settle for debating over which team got the best “reverse retro” jersey. Adidas and the NHL teamed up for a concept of taking old-time NHL sweater and mixing up the colors to create the reverse retro look. Here’s my grades for all 31 clubs.
Final Thoughts on the 2020 NYR Season
Historically, the Rangers dominate Carolina. It’s just one of those teams that the Rangers seem to beat often. But not this time. The Hurricanes didn’t just beat the Rangers; they embarrassed them. Top to bottom. Defense, offense, goaltending, physicality, goal-scoring, you name it, the Canes brutalized the Rangers in 3 games. That was tough to watch, but hey, at least it was over quick.
What The Puck Podcast: “Seattle Krakhouse”
This week, Dom and Silvers break down the exhibition games, talk about Seattle's new team name/unis, and speculate on the upcoming play-in round.
What The Puck Podcast: “24 Team Playoffs, Still No Hockey”
This episode, Silvers and Dom talk about the crazy 24-team playoff format that has been made official by the NHL, the potential hub cities, and the Florida Panthers' incredible 2006 intro video. Sponsored by Blackout Hockey Club
Hockey Teams You've Never Heard Of: Cleveland Barons
The Golden Seals moved to Cleveland and became the Barons in August of 1976. The Barons were previously an AHL team and had been established in 1937. Prior to that, they were known as the Cleveland Falcons, and Indians in the IHL.
What The Puck Podcast: “Weekend Whiskeys feat. Easton Oliver”
Without much else to talk about, Dom and Silvers discuss possible playoff scenarios that could play out if the NHL returns this season. Also, the draft... How does that work if there's no offseason? Then, Fed League LEGEND Easton Oliver joins Silvers to talk about quarantine life in NYC, returning to the Federal League, and offseason workout routines.
Hockey Teams You've Never Heard Of: California Golden Seals
The California Golden Seals were Northern California’s first hockey team. Before the Sharks became San Jose’s hockey team in the early 90’s, the Golden Seals were the original Bay Area squad. They struggled on and off the ice, which was a big reason why most people have never even heard of them.
What The Puck Podcast: "Cabin Fever"
Dom and Silvers talk about... well, the only thing there is to talk about. That virus that everyone hates, and how its impacting the hockey world. How will the NHL finish the season? How will palyoffs work? Will we gain 100 pounds while practicing social distancing? No one knows, but we attempt to shed some light on some strange times.
The Best Theme-Night Hockey Jerseys This Season
Whether it’s cheap seats, 1-dollar hot dogs, 50-cent beers, or wacky uniforms, minor league teams always have to find crazy ways to draw in the crowds. Minor league hockey is no different than the rest, especially when it comes to the uniforms. This season we have been blessed with some of the best theme-night jerseys the world has ever seen.
What The Puck Podcast: “700 Watch, feat. DJ AR Smooth”
Ovi is on his road to 700, the trade deadline is boring as hell this year, and the Lightning are overpaying for depth. Dom and Silvers break it all down. Then, DJ AR Smooth joins Silvers to talk about his hockey background, lack of hair, love for music, and future as a famous DJ.
Ovechkin is Going to Break Gretzky's Goal Record
Wayne Gretzky sits atop all NHL scorers with 894 goals. Ovechkin still has a long road ahead if he wants to catch that number, but I think he can do it. In fact, his career number say he will do it.
NHL Uni Rankings (19-15)
The third set in the NHL Uniform Rankings by Andrew Silvers. Down to the last 15 teams in the NHL. Each set gets more and more controversial!
Ranking the 31 Current NHL Unis (31 - 26)
After my last jersey ranking article (attached link), I quickly realized how passionate people are about hockey jerseys. Especially Buffalo Sabres fans… I’ve always been a fan of sports uniforms and jerseys too, and seeing how well-received my last article was (*heavy sarcasm*), I figured, “why not try it again?” This list is comprised of all current 31 NHL teams and takes into consideration their home and away unis. No 3rds, no alternates, no Winter Classics. Just the basics here, and I’ll be releasing 5 at a time. Here’s the bottom 6 to start.
2019 New NHL Jersey Ratings (UPDATED)
I believe it was during the 1990’s to boost merchandise sales that the NHL introduced 3rd jerseys. Ever since then, we’ve been treated to some of the greatest hockey uniforms in history, but also some of the worst. This offseason a few teams decided to spice things up around their arenas by adding new unis to their lineups. Was this the greatest offseason for uniform changes we’ve ever had? No, but I do feel that this new lineup of hockey sweaters is worth putting through a grading scale.
Winners and Losers of NHL Free Agency 2019
July 1st is always an eventful day in the NHL. Players find new homes via free agency and trades for a majority of the day. Some teams do better than others when it comes to approaching this day. This year had several teams finding elite talent while others had to sit back and dig to find some skill in the lower ranks of free agency.
The Devils Had One Hell of a Weekend
Going into the draft this past Friday, the Devils had a very difficult decision to make. They were awarded the 1st overall pick in this year’s entry draft and were given the opportunity to select either Jack Hughes, or Kaapa Kakko. The draft class was deep this year, but these two were very clearly the top choices. Once the draft began in Vancouver, the Devils kicked things off by selecting Jack Hughes.
