Top 5 Hockey Movies
Top 5 Hockey Movies
Sports movies is a genre of movies that really has an elite group of timeless movies: Remember the Titans, Bull Durham, Rudy, and a few more. Hockey movies are no different. So, I thought to myself, “what better way to pass the time this summer then to re-watch some of these classics. After all, I can only watch the Avengers so many times….
5. The Mighty Ducks
The Mighty Ducks is a classic. We’ve all seen it. We all love it. Even though it is a kid’s movie, there was certainly some adult humor in the movie. Like a joke about blueballs. I’m still not sure how that joke was allowed to be put in the movie…
4. Youngblood
Two words: Rob Lowe. Two more words: Patrick Swayze. Okay, maybe not words, but those two names say a lot. Kind of a cheesy take on junior hockey life in the 80’s, but it is a great look at how hockey used to be played. Brutal fighting, CTE ridden, and filled with great action shots of Rob Lowe dangling defenders and shitty goalies. Great flick. Oh, and Keanu Reeves.
3. Mystery Alaska
Definitely the best combo of humor and inspiration rolled into a hockey movie. There were many funny moments in this movie, but the best parts of this movie come from the pure fantasy of the plot. What would it be like if your “Saturday” team was given the chance to play against an NHL team? Would you come within a crossbar of tying the game late and pushing some of the best players in the world to overtime on national television? Probably not. But still, isn’t it cool to think about?
2. Slap Shot
Comedy at its finest. Slap Shot is a cult classic that I feel gets overlooked outside of the hockey world. Even though it was made in 1977, the jokes still hold up today. A lesser known fact about the character “Reggie Dunlop,” is that Nick Nolte and Al Pacino were actually interested in the role first before it was eventually given to Paul Newman. Nolte and Pacino didn’t have time to perfect ice skating for the role in time. Looking back on it, Newman was perfect for the movie and I wouldn’t have changed him out for anyone.
1. Miracle
Anyone who has ever played hockey and been on a bus trip has probably seen this movie 4000+ times. Its an inspiring movie about the 1980 US Olympic Men’s Hockey Team who overcame all odds to defeat the Soviet Union team. Great acting, great writing, and great story (obviously). Its just an all-around great movie. If you haven’t seen it (you probably live under a rock), I’d recommend watching it before you have a big event because it will get you jacked up and make you feel like you can do anything. “Why did you play college hockey?” “Isn’t it obvious? For the girls!”
