NHL Uni Rankings (19-15)
19. Pittsburgh Penguins
Black and Yellow. We all know the song. I don’t mind the black and yellow colors, but the Penguins have an odd setup on the sleeves and their socks don’t really reflect that. It doesn’t match to me. The white and black gloves need to be updated to add some yellow in there. Having said all that, the black and yellow is a great color combo. I would like to see a little less yellow in their home unis on the arms. A little more black would be an improvement.
18. Ottawa Senators
Another red and black team. Again, great sports colors but not the best execution. The arm striping is still reminiscent of that odd Reebok Edge style, so an update there would be helpful to their case. The thing that the Senators have over the Devils is the slight gold trim that they use in their unis. The gold lettering on the pants and the trim around the main crest is a nice touch. Their gloves are all black with a red cuff roll and it looks clean. Super Canadian too for the nation’s capital team.
17. Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars upgraded their style when they dropped the gold and committed to green. The green jerseys look great and the color combo with black trim stands out. However, I can’t help but notice that the Stars didn’t create something original with their green or white jerseys. The greens are a rip off from Chicago’s red jerseys, and the whites are a rip off from Montreal’s whites. I have to knock them for basically stealing their jerseys styles from other teams and that brings Dallas to only a mid-level jersey setup for me.
16. Tampa Bay Lightning
Speaking of rip offs, the Bolts did exactly that from the Detroit Red Wing’s style. Dropping black out of their primary color scheme to try to become a type of a “brand” was a mistake in my mind. There would have been so much more to work with if they kept black in the unis. But judging what they have is still pretty nice. You really can’t go wrong with blue and white. It’s a very classic look that goes a long way. The Lightning have had much worse jerseys in the past, so sitting at #16 is actually really good for them.
15. Winnipeg Jets
These jerseys are good, but not great. They could’ve been great if they Jets had decided to keep red in their color scheme. Their logo is awesome. The Jet with the leaf behind it (which is a staple among pretty much any Canadian logo, not just in hockey) is a great update from the old Jets logo. The mix of the navy blue with the light blue is a good complimenting color scheme, but I just can’t help but feel that these are missing something. Maybe a red lining around the neck or something? I can’t quite pick it out, but there is something holding Winnipeg back at #15.
