Recently some major news hit the gaming world that has everyone excited. In fact, most people would say that this recent news would never happen - but it did! The two biggest rivals in gaming today, Sony and Microsoft, have announced that they will join forces to enhance their game streaming services! This news has the gaming world a buzz but what does this mean?

A press release issued states: "The two companies will partner on new innovations to enhance customer experiences in their direct-to-consumer entertainment platforms and AI solutions. The two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services. By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers."

Although not necessarily a new concept, game streaming services have already begun to emerge with Sony’s release of PlayStation Now, Amazon announcing its own plans, and even Google trying to get in on the action with Stadia cloud gaming expected to be released later this year. There’s been speculation that Google’s announcement back in March regarding Stadia has prompted the cooperation between the two gaming giants. Either way, it goes without saying that this move could lead to some amazing developments.

Is it possible to start believing that we will finally be able to have cross-platform play between PSN and Xbox Live? Lately I’ve been hooked on Apex Legends but (annoyingly) have to constantly switch back and forth between my PS4 and Xbox One telling one group of friends to hang on while I finish up a game with my another group of friends just to play the same game. Also, one has to wonder what it would be like to see Nathan Hale from Resistance join forces with Marcus Fenix from Gears of War to defend against an alien invasion. Most likely won’t happen but a gamer’s gotta dream!

Considering what Netflix has done with the movie industry, it only seems logical that the gaming industry will follow that path. This will inevitably eliminate the need for expensive hardware potentially brining gaming to a wider audience. This could be another reason why Sony and Microsoft are strategically cooperating. Although we are still in the early stages of this news, it is something every gamer will be looking forward to learning more about!
