Stanley Cup Final Preview: Bruins vs. Blues
So, here we are. The Stanley Cup Final has been set. St Louis was able to defeat the Sharks in 6 games to advance to their first Cup Final appearance in 49 years. Ironically enough, the last time they made it here, they faced off against the Boston Bruins. Almost half a century later, we have a rematch between the two on the big stage.
Boston got here ages ago when they swept Carolina right out of the playoffs, ending their unexpected run to the conference finals. I’ve written several blog about the Bruins this post-season, so there’s not much that I can say about this team that I haven’t said before. There is one thing I noticed during the conference finals that I noticed about this team: several players scored key goals during the series that I had never even heard of before. This just speaks volumes about the depth of Boston’s roster. They don’t rely on Marchand, Pastrnak, or Bergeron to get it done every night. Even in the unlikely circumstances that those 3 big guns aren’t out there dominating, they have guys that are contributing that are not top-line players (at least not on Boston). Here’s an example: Connor Clifton. If you’ve heard of him before this post-season you’re either a Bruins fan or a liar. Here’s another one: Chris Wagner. Don’t lie, you don’t know who he is. Also, how about Charlie Coyle? 6 goals in 12 playoff games. What an acquisition at the deadline for this team. He’s stepped up and is taking over that 3C spot better than anyone would’ve guessed. I won’t get into talking about Rask either. The guy just gets it.
St. Louis is a fun story in the West. Last place in the NHL standings in January, now Conference champions. Who saw that coming? It’s been a terrific turnaround for them and I think most of it can be attributed to Jordan Binnington. This guy came in and solidified the pipes for the Blues. It’s a great story because it shows how close this team has been in the past but was never able to advance this far. Another reason why goaltending is the most important position in hockey. This guy has some swagger too. If the Blues want a decent shot winning 4 against Boston, Bin-Nasty has to be their best player. I can’t overlook Ryan O’Reilly because he’s another potential Conn Smythe candidate in my book. He’s been really good for St. Louis all year, not just during the playoffs, or post-2018.
Head-to-head, this is a solid matchup. Both of these teams are strong in all areas and both teams have been buzzing since about January 1. Unfortunately, my prediction is Boston in 7. I hate it, you hate it, we all hate it.... but you can’t deny the depth and strength of this B’s team. They just have it going this year. Also, experience is key. Boston has several players who have played in a SCF before, many of whom won the Cup in 2011. St. Louis has David Perron who went last season with Vegas.
